What is a Subnet Mask?
- Definition: A Subnet Mask is used to divide an IP address into two parts: the "Network Address" and the "Host Address".
- Role: Helps network devices determine if the destination IP is in the same local network (subnet). If so, it communicates directly; otherwise, it forwards through a gateway (e.g., a router).
Common IP Address Classes
- Class A: 1.0.0.0 to 126.255.255.255 (default mask 255.0.0.0 / 8). Used for massive networks.
- Class B: 128.0.0.0 to 191.255.255.255 (default mask 255.255.0.0 / 16). Used for medium networks.
- Class C: 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255 (default mask 255.255.255.0 / 24). Used for small networks (e.g., home, office LAN).
- Class D/E: 224-239 (Multicast group), 240-255 (Reserved for research, not for general use).
